We normally run three Mystery trips a year – Spring, Summer and a Festive holiday in early November, and we don’t duplicate the same Mystery Holiday locations within about the same 12-18 month period.
This time we ended up in the beautiful English Riviera resort of Torquay, staying at the Regina Hotel, which is located right on the harbour edge, just opposite Beacon Quay. It’s in a lovely position to watch the boats go in and out, and you’re literally a stone’s throw from the town centre, so a great spot all round!
On Tuesday, our included excursion began with a coffee stop at Endsleigh Garden Centre before enjoying a scenic drive across the edge of the moors for our visit to Tavistock.
The town itself is quite compact, and is famous for its Pannier Market which was granted its Royal Charter in 1105. There are also many connections with Sir Francis Drake, who was born just outside Tavistock and lived locally at Buckland Abbey, a nearby National Trust property.
Our free day was the perfect opportunity for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves. Being based down in the harbour area meant there were lots of different things to do with easy access to the surrounding area. There’s a regular ferry service to the pretty fishing village of Brixham which a few of our passengers went across to (apparently a slightly choppy sailing), or local bus services to Newton Abbot & Paignton.
On Thursday, we headed to Exeter for opportunity to do some shopping, as well as explore both the city and Quay area. One of the quirky landmarks in Exeter is the famous ‘House that Moved’, which was relocated to its present position in the 1950s due to road expansion on its original location.
All in all an excellent break – where will we end up on our next Mystery trip?
