JACOBITE RAILWAY
The Jacobite Railway in Scotland is arguably one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world. This 84-mile round trip from Fort William to Mallaig passes through some of Scotland's most dramatic landscapes, most famously crossing the 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct, which has gained recent fame from its appearances in the Harry Potter films. As the train winds its way through the highlands, passengers are treated to stunning views of lochs, moors, and mountains, with glimpses of the Small Isles and the Isle of Skye on a clear day. Time to explore in Mallaig before the return journey makes this an excellent day out from Fort William in the Highlands
SNOWDON MOUNTAIN RAILWAY
Where else can you touch the sky from the highest point in Wales? Snowdon Mountain Railway is a narrow-gauge rack-and-pinion railway which has been climbing to the summit since 1896, beginning in Llanberis and climbing to the summit at 3,560 feet, where, on a clear day, you can see as far as Ireland! Access to the summit is dependent on the weather, as well as ice and snow in the early season, but views from Clogwyn Station are just as spectacular even if you don’t quite make the summit! Snowdon Mountain Railway will be featuring in our 2026 holiday programme and new brochure – so keep a look out!
SETTLE-CARLISLE RAILWAY
Somewhat unusually among heritage railways, the Settle-Carlisle railway actually forms part of the mainline and is part of a much longer cross-country route. While it is typically a modern train, steam engines are occasionally used on this line for special occasions and events. The route stretches 73 miles across the north of England, and is celebrated for its Victorian architecture and the stunning landscapes, with 14 tunnels and 20 viaducts testifying to the determination of its Victorian builders. The highlight of the journey is the Ribblehead Viaduct, with its 24 massive stone arches striding across the Ribble Valley.
WELSH HIGHLAND RAILWAY
The Welsh Highland Railway, the UK's longest heritage railway, runs for 25 miles from Caernarfon to Porthmadog through the heart of Snowdonia, and offers a different perspective on the Welsh mountains compared to the Snowdon Mountain Railway. The journey takes you past the foot of Snowdon, through the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass, and along the shores of Llyn Cwellyn. The Welsh Highland Railway offers a variety of journeys, from a full line trip to smaller days out, such as the excursion to Beddgelert which we enjoyed on one of our holidays last year, with a shorter railway journey and free time to explore the picturesque village before returningto Porthmadog by train. It also connects with the Ffestiniog Railway for a journey into the heart of the slate mining industry
BELMOND BRITISH PULLMAN
The Belmond British Pullman offers a journey that epitomizes the golden age of rail travel, evoking the glamour and elegance of the 1920s and 30s. In previous years, we have enjoyed both a scenic round trip of the Kent countryside and a day excursion to historic Bath with free time to explore the city!
