Explore the history and heritage of the Highlands
Discover the rich history and heritage of the Scottish Highlands on this carefully paced coach holiday, featuring Culloden Battlefield, ancient standing stones, iconic castles, Loch Ness, traditional Highland culture and spectacular scenery, ideal for special interest and heritage-focused groups
Day 1: Travel to Inverness, arrive at the hotel and check in for dinner
Day 2: Culloden Battlefield and Inverness
Today, the focus is on one of the most significant events in Scottish history. A visit to Culloden Battlefield brings the story of the Jacobite Rising vividly to life, with its excellent visitor centre and preserved battlefield cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. After our visit, we return to Inverness for free time to enjoy a gentle stroll along the River Ness or explore the compact city centre, with its castle, shops and cafés
Day 3: Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness cruise
Explores the world-famous Loch Ness, with a scenic boat cruise on Loch Ness adds a relaxing element to the day, allowing visitors to enjoy the dramatic surroundings and hear stories of the loch’s legendary past. The ruins of Urquhart Castle stand proudly on the loch’s shoreline and provide sweeping views across the water, alongside tales of medieval conflict and clan rivalry, and finally a visit to Fort Augustus allows some free time to wander along part of the Caledonian Canal
Day 4: Dunrobin Castle and Glenmorangie Distillery Tour
Today, we head north along the coast road to Dunrobin Castle, one of the Highlands’ most impressive stately homes. With its fairy-tale architecture, elegant interiors and beautifully maintained gardens, the castle offers a rich history stretching back to the Middle Ages. Later, the journey continues to the nearby Glenmorangie Distillery, where a guided tour explains the traditional whisky-making process, followed by the opportunity to sample a selection of single malt whiskies
Day 5: Highland Folk Museum & the Cairngorms
Today we travel south to the heart of the Highlands to visit the Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore. This open-air museum vividly recreates Highland life from the 1700s through to the early 20th century, with historic buildings, costumed interpreters and traditional crafts. The afternoon continues into the Cairngorms National Park, with a scenic drive to Cairngorm Mountain base station for views across the landscape. A journey on the funicular railway can be included if required / weather permitting
Day 6: Depart hotel after breakfast for your homeward journey
